I've never been treated harshly by any comic store guys. I've had a man be quite surprised that the comics I was buying were actually for me, but never anything negative. I used to be intimidated about going into comic shops, like I was out of place. However, I think most guys (as exemplified by our wonderful BAMF! and hidden) think women who read comics are a pleasant surprise. So now, I'm not a Scardywhisk! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif
When I go into the comic shop, it's usually on my lunch break so I'm wearing business clothes. Maybe I should hop up to this guy's shop, and let him know serious, comic-loving gals out there.

WOW I am fortunate I didnt have to go through what you guys did!
I never entered a comic shop thinking it was strange,for me as a girl,to be into comics.I mean I always knew it was rare but I didnt let that get in my way.I just did my business and left.Sometimes I would get looks from guys suggesting it was cool that I was into comics.
My new comic shop is espeacially cool--Golden Apple in West Hollywood.On they're comic bags they had something written like."Cool guys and GALS get theyre comics from Golden Apple"I was pretty surprised by that.
I think its stupid.And bad business sense on the parts of some comic store owners to be discriminatory towards girls who read comics.Your always hearing them complaining how hard it is to own a comic shop now.The more people buy comics the better.Espeacially with the state of the comics industry today. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Well the moral of my story is the guy who gave me bad service went out of business. I stopped going there after I decided he was not worthy. It took about 2 years, but he must have pissed off other people and went out of business.

I've had those bad experiences and some good ones, but the odder ones I get are when I go in there in work clothes. I have to dress up for work, bleh!, and several times when I go in and someone I don't recognize is working they think I'm a salesman or cop or something. One time I came in with my press credents on by accident and they thought I was there to do a story on them and go all excited. Oops. I never did that again.

You should have messed with them a little. Tell em you were doing a story on their shope in a major publication. Maybe they would have given you some free comics as source material.

Well, Slarti, you'll be happy to know I've been receiving treatment for my pants-stealing compulsions and have it mostly undercontrol. So long as I carry a pair of khakis around.
I dunno about the rest of the fellows but I thought this place was still down. Plus I've had major problems getting online latetly.
I'm really surprised and sad to hear that you ladies have such trouble in comic shops. Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that most guys NEVER see a female entering a comicbook store, so it's probably shock. I remember seeing a movie called "Free Enterprise" in wich a guy meats this girl at a comic store, and thinking "Oh, here's where the science fiction aspect enters in."
Any place you guys(gals) go should feel grateful to have such cool people as customers.

I'm a little late in this conversation but I must say I've never had any problems in the comic shops I frequent. The owners have always been nice and even remember my name.
Maybe it's a regional thing. Very weird!
One thing I do find rather disturbing is that no women write the comics. I collect various XMen titles and have an old pile of lots of other titles --- I simply can't recall any woman's name in the writing credits. Now =that's= weird. :P

acctuallo i never had problems with that...
but i think i'm the only girl in my city who read comics (american!) because the other girls read mangas, and here in yucatan the people used to get more mangas than american comics, there is only three comics shops here and one belongs to a friend of mine and i help him, buying online for his store, and at the same time i bought my stuff (my most recently issues, the NC mini and excalibur #16!!! hehehe)so being only thre stores, i know most of the people who read comics in my city and most of them are starwars geeks and read pure violence stores.
my ex-boyfriend was the only one who always was get in to my nerves because i love nighty, but i guess he was very jealous!! hehehehehe

Well, the ice cream is in fact not really blue an fuzzy, I used an image inducer to make it look so... Hmmm, I believe it's some vanilla with, uhm, strawberries? Haven't tasted mmyself yet.

Hm, well, I use the "buddy system", so I wouldn't know much about this (as of yet). I find it a lot nicer and fun to make it a friend-group trip ... we get to share the moments!

I am so ANGRY that so many other women have to deal with that kind of nonsense when they want to go to a comic shop!!!!! I've been into comics on and off since J.R. High School, and I've dealt with it since then! I am really pissed that Marvel has written off one of my all-time favorite characters, Kitty Pryde! If ever there was ever a strong and intellectual (and sort of goofy, but that's why I love her!) role model for young women, it was Shadowcat, and now she's gone! It really sucks! I think that the only place that I get more attitude than the comic book shops is in Sam Ash (a musical instruments and equipment chain that is NOTOROIUSLY sexist). Just another place that stupid men do not want to see women going. I also get angry when the cashier gives me attitude about picking up Excalibur or X-Men comics! (Oooo! I saw something in the thread about Excalibur #16! That's a yummy one!) I cannot subsist on the gleeful mayhem of Slave Labor Graphics comics alone! In New York, people can be VERY snotty about your comic book selections. So much unwarranted attitude. Grrrrrrrr.

Well, to your advantage, spookyspice, there are a plethora of comic shops in the big city.. (I just happened not to mention they tend not to be very conveniently spaced. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/redface.gif ) Perhaps you can find a day to go cruising to another shop... perhaps there ARE nice people in New York and you just haven't found them yet. Oh, btw, I'm proud to be a guy and all, but I think the whole idea of engrossing one's self with his masculinity only leads to becoming a chauvanist, whom I greatly despise. It made sense that she'd want to get the heck out of the XMen and that mansion after losing Piotr. But really, how long can she stay out of it? Besides, Uncanny is strangely female-less. Has anyone noticed that? One of the gals is bound to join up with the boys sooner or later. I hope it's Kitty!
Maybe the hostility toward women in comic shops is regional. I live in CA and have never had any problem. I've frequented 2 shops here in Fresno and the owners were always friendly and helpful. Up in N. Cal, too.....last time I was in a shop up there, the clerk was ready to talk about the books.
I dunno.....It does irk me that very few women work in comics. Hmmm.....

It's just one of those things, though, that happen without intent or consequence. For example, more guys work in the video game industry than gals, and more gals work in the fashion industry than guys, (or so it seems... I've never seen any certified statistics.. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/redface.gif) But the point is, there seem to be fields that are more certifiably made up of one sex than the other. It's not that anyone really intended for it to be that way, it just is. Thoughts?

I've been to five shops in New York, and only one place was not nasty to me. And in Brooklyn, I've been to three, and only two of those places were friendly and helpful. Maybe it's just me. Oh, yes I do hope Kitty comes back. Where have all the girls gone? Grrrrrrr! I'm actually working on a song about Kitty. Sort of. It's weird. It's mostly about her, but it's about myself, too, and how I can never find clothes that fit me, and all the bras in my size have been discontinued. I'm built similarly to Kitty, cira early Excalibur, so the song is called "Pryde Sized." It's still a work in progress, though.

I've heard there's a Weezer song out there with reference to Kitty and Nightcrawler. Has anybody heard it? It's from a few years back.
